FAQ: Herbs compared to prescription and OTC medications

Q- How do herbs compare to prescription and OTC medications?
A- First of all, the action of many prescription and OTC medications is based on an action from an herb. Drug companies study different herbs to either isolate or replica that action in a medication. Some medications are even taken directly from herbs which are then highly processed along with other substances. There are some prescription and OTC medications that cannot be replicated in the herbal world and we do believe there is a place for modern medicine.
Herbs can be used alongside most prescription and OTC medicines. However, you should always check with your healthcare professional before doing so, as many herbs have the same action as prescription drugs. For example, St. John's Wort & Kava Kava should not be combined with antidepressants; Ginkgo can act as a blood thinner, and is therefore not recommended for ones taking anti-clotting medications such as aspirin or coumadin.
