FAQ- What’s the difference between your Mineral Formula and a Multi-Vitamin?

Posted by TriLight Health on Sep 21st 2026

Our herbal multivitamin and mineral formulas are in a class of their own. Compared to what you find on box store shelves, nothing comes close. We offer some of the few plant-based multivitamins and completely plant-based iron supplements available. Original Herbal Minerals is our prenatal-friendly option; Blue Green Minerals contains many of the same herbs, plus added blue-green algae, calcium, magnesium, and a few unique herbs.

As for the vitamins in the formula, it's different than a traditional multivitamin. isn't a traditional multivitamin. Most multivitamins use specific amounts of synthetics. Ours is made from herbs that are high in a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, as well as highly absorbable. Because the FDA will not allow us to make claims in this area, we can say that Moms have used it as a prenatal for over 35 years, safely and with great success.

Original Herbal Minerals vs. Blue Green Minerals: What's the Difference?

Many customers ask us how to choose between our two mineral formulas, since they share so many of the same herbs. Here's a quick side-by-side look at what sets them apart.

Feature Original Herbal Minerals Blue Green Minerals
Leading Ingredient Alfalfa Blue Green Algae
Shared Base Herbs Alfalfa, Oatstraw, Shavegrass, Red Raspberry, Peppermint, Chamomile, Yarrow, Chickweed, and Dill
Formula-Specific Herbs Borage Blue Green Algae, Rosehips, Pau d'Arco, Flaxseed, Green Stevia
Added Nutrients None beyond the herbs themselves ActiVin grape seed extract, Calcite Super (calcium), Magnesium Citrate
Base Kosher Vegetable Glycerin and Reverse Osmosis Water, Certified Organic

Both share the same goal: nourish the body with whole, plant-based ingredients instead of isolated synthetics.

Since the two formulas overlap in so many of their herbs, the difference really comes down to what extra support you're looking for. Many families keep both on hand and rotate between them depending on the season or what their bodies seem to need that week.

Our Mineral Formulas Include-

  • Plant-based liquid allows up to 90% absorption vs. 60% absorption from synthetic multivitamin
  • A small dose your body can handle vs. megadoses in traditional vitamins
  • Vitamins from natural, plant-based ingredients with a proven historical track record
  • Liquid that is easy on the gut
  • Delicious taste - no gulping down big pills or a nasty liquid
  • No need for a bunch of different bottles for a "kids only" or his/hers blend

What About Iron?

Iron is one nutrient that sometimes needs its own dedicated formula, which is why we created Tri-Iron. Unlike Original Herbal Minerals and Blue Green Minerals, which are broad, whole-body formulas, Tri-Iron is blended specifically around iron-supportive herbs: Nettle Leaf, Yellow Dock, Red Raspberry, Dandelion, and Anise, in the same Kosher Vegetable Glycerine and Reverse Osmosis Water base used across our formulas.

Because it's plant-based, Tri-Iron is gentle and highly absorbable. A quarter teaspoon is roughly equivalent to 15 mg of iron, and it's meant for short-term, as-needed use rather than daily megadosing. The herbs are pregnancy-friendly, though as always, check with your provider before adding anything new, especially if you're also taking a prescription iron supplement.

Because Tri-Iron is formulated around iron specifically, many families pair it with Original Herbal Minerals rather than using it as a stand-alone multivitamin, a combination that's especially common through the pregnancy years.

Finding Your Formula

If you're unsure where to start, keep this in mind: Original Herbal Minerals is a good everyday choice and can be used as a prenatal; Blue Green Minerals is a good fit if you want the added calcium, magnesium, and antioxidant support; and Tri-Iron steps in when iron is the priority. Many of our longtime customers rotate between all three, and there's no wrong place to begin.
