Herb of the Day: Chickweed
Posted by TriLight Health on Sep 17th 2026
Chickweed is a common weed that can frustrate gardeners. This plant is hardy and grows year-round along roadsides, in cracks along your driveway, and all over the yard. However, for herbalists, it's a valuable plant we love, and we hope you will take a second look before cursing it when it shows up in your yard! Chickweed is high in many vitamins & minerals and can be a healthful, delicious addition to salads. Herbalists often add it to preparations to boost nutrient content as a bioavailable source of vitamins and minerals. It can be used topically or internally and has a mild flavor, so it is easy to mix with other herbs.

Chickweed can also be used topically as support for skin irritation and itching. It is also a highly mucilaginous herb, which gives it a unique texture. Mucilaginous herbs may help to calm mucous membranes and irritated digestive tracts.
Our Formulas Containing Chickweed
Chickweed is found in Lungs Plus, Lung Tonic, Blue Green Minerals, and Original Herbal Minerals.
Lungs Plus is a cough formula carefully formulated with herbs that have expectorant and demulcent properties. It contains Mullein, *Wild Cherry Bark, *Chestnut, *Astragalus Root, *Peppermint, *Coltsfoot, *Plantain, *Chickweed, Pleurisy Root, *Elecampane, and *Horehound. (*= organic). Customers often like to keep this blend next to their beds at night, but it can be used during the day too. We include Lungs Plus in our Cold & Flu Night Time Kit.
"Trilight products are the only products in our medicine cabinet. Lungs Plus is a must-have for when we get congested or have a lingering cough. Works for the whole family!" AB
Lung Tonic is our pregnancy-friendly herbal cough formula. It contains the same herbs as Lungs Plus minus the Coltsfoot, which should be avoided in pregnancy. Midwives often recommend it because pregnancy-friendly cough syrups can be hard to find. Customers also like this blend for chronic respiratory condition support- also because of the lack of Coltsfoot, which should not be used long-term.
"Great respiratory support during pregnancy. It's nice bc you are limited to what you can take while pregnant. I love that Trilight Health has options for everyone! They have great products that I recommend to everyone!" Christina
Part of what makes chickweed so valued in herbal medicine is its nutrient density. It's rich in Vitamin C, magnesium, iron, and B12, along with calcium, potassium, and other trace minerals. That's part of why chickweed is such a common addition to herbal mineral formulas: rather than isolating a single nutrient, it delivers a broad spectrum of vitamins and minerals the way nature packaged them. We use it in our two herbal multivitamins, Blue Green Minerals and Original Herbal Minerals.
Blue Green Minerals is our most complete herbal multivitamin. It contains herbs like chickweed, alfalfa, and oatstraw with added blue-green algae, calcium, magnesium, and grape seed extract. It is a bioavailable and delicious source of a wide range of vitamins and minerals for all ages.
"Been taking this for years with my daughter. I love everything about it. I can give her something healthy and natural and we both feel great!" Kayla
Original Herbal Minerals has been best known for our herbal prenatal vitamin for over 35 years. It contains many of the same base ingredients as Blue Green Minerals and is pregnancy-friendly, whereas Blue Green Minerals is not approved for use in pregnancy. It is a favorite among moms with picky eaters and those who are looking for a truly plant-based multivitamin.
"I enjoy being able to take a daily multivitamin in liquid form. The taste is great and I appreciate products without any sugars or added fillers." Janice
