Capsules vs. Liquid Herbal Extracts: Which Is Right for You?
Posted by TriLight Health on Sep 8th 2026
When it comes to taking herbs, most people land on one of two forms: capsules or liquid extracts. Both have real advantages, and the right choice often comes down to who's taking them and why. Many of our customers are moms with small children who can't swallow a capsule, or older adults who have the same trouble. Our glycerin-based liquid formulas also taste good enough that kids will actually take them without a fight, which is half the battle with any remedy.
Here's how the two compare.

Capsules: Pros
- Avoid the unpleasant taste of herbs or synthetic additives
- Easy to carry
- Save preparation time
- Deliver an exact, regulated dose
Capsules: Cons
- Can be hard to swallow, especially for children and older adults
- Assimilation is typically lower than extracts
- Tablets can assimilate even less, as low as 4 to 12%
Liquid Extracts: Pros
- Concentrated form of the herb that gives results more quickly
- Often more cost-effective, since assimilation can run as high as 98% (compared to around 60% for synthetic formulas)
- Can be dosed in small amounts throughout the day instead of one mega-dose
Liquid Extracts: Cons
- Less convenient to transport, though our 2oz travel bottles solve this for most people
- Herbs can taste unpleasant on their own. Not an issue with TriLight formulas, which are formulated to be fast-acting and great-tasting
Why We Offer Liquid Herbs
Time-honored. People have taken herbs in liquid form for centuries, from teas and tonics to tinctures and extracts. Wherever herbal medicine is most developed, liquid preparations remain the most widely used.
Taste matters. Traditional medicine holds that tasting an herb is part of how it works. Research in Germany suggests Echinacea's immune-supporting properties begin when the active compounds contact receptors in the mouth, and herbalists have long valued bitter flavors for stimulating digestion.
Bioavailable. Liquid extraction separates an herb's active constituents from indigestible cell wall material and inactive fillers like starch, so what you take is already in a more pre-digested state. That matters most for people with weak digestion, children, older adults, pregnant women, and anyone who doesn't want to lose energy to a long digestion process.
Faster assimilation. Dry or pressed herb tablets can take over an hour to break down, if they break down fully at all. Liquids begin assimilating in 15 to 20 minutes, even faster when held under the tongue, where active ingredients can enter the bloodstream directly.
Fast-acting. Because the active compounds are concentrated and more bioavailable, absorption is more complete, and results show up faster than with encapsulated dry herbs.
Our extraction method. We use a proprietary Liquid Light process. Compared to the single-stage, high-heat methods most glycerites use, our slower, three-stage process preserves more active constituents, along with naturally occurring vitamins, enzymes, minerals, and volatile oils.
What Is the Liquid Light Process?
- Cold stage (minimum 14 days). We use light to gently "marry" the herbs and purify with UV rays, without added heat. This slow stage preserves the natural enzymes that help the body assimilate the formula and improves potency.
- Low heat, low pressure stage. The remaining herb material is processed to capture volatile oils, vitamins, and minerals intact within the glycerine.
- Cold press. A custom stainless-steel press extracts further nutrients using six tons of pressure, the method that yields the highest nutritional quality with the least oxidation.
Combined with reverse osmosis water, the result is what we call Liquid Colloidals, preserving the plant's natural delivery system and boosting body assimilation to 98%.
Why Glycerine Instead of Alcohol?
We wanted a family-friendly extraction method with no downsides for children or anyone with dietary restrictions, so we use pure Kosher vegetable glycerine. It tastes sweet but isn't a sugar and won't raise blood sugar. It's a natural, non-toxic byproduct of fats and oils, and it doubles as a solvent and a preservative. Herbalist Dr. Edward Shook considered glycerine extracts superior to alcohol for removing toxins from the body, and some research points to a cleansing, antioxidant effect. For families, the taste and safety of glycerine-based extracts make it the clear choice over alcohol.
