Herb of the Day: Marshmallow
Posted by TriLight Health on Jun 10th 2026

Camping season has arrived. A staple of camping for most of us is the S’more. Most people don’t know marshmallows were originally made with marshmallow root. In fact, a healthy, herb-infused marshmallow is easy to make at home. There are also a lot of "cottage manufacturers" who sell them. While marshmallows no longer contain this herb, herbalists still use marshmallow topically and internally. Most often, the root is used; it is also used to make marshmallow candies.

Traditional Herbal Uses of Marshmallow:

Althaea officinalis

- Diarrhea
- Inflammation
- Kidney stones
- Lymphatic support
- Nausea & other digestive concerns

- Urinary Tract Infection
- More!
The Plant
The marshmallow plant, Althaea officinalis, is native to parts of Europe and Northern Africa. It’s now cultivated in locations worldwide. The plant itself grows best in damp areas. Once established, they’re easy to take care of. Growing up to three feet tall with beautiful flowers, the marshmallow is sometimes used as a decorative plant. The root itself is used in herbal preparations. It is these roots that contain a unique mucilaginous substance not found in any other plant. Roots are typically harvested from plants that are at least a couple of years old.
