Herb of the Day: Oatstraw | Oatstraw Benefits & Uses
Posted by TriLight Health on Apr 23rd 2026
Oatstraw is the stem from which the grain oatmeal grows. It is harvested during the "milky oat" stage while still green. The grain is separated, and the stem, seeds, and leaves are used in herbal preparations. Oatstraw has extremely high levels of magnesium, calcium, and B vitamins. This herb is often used in herbal vitamins and mineral products. It's also beloved by herbalists for its effects on the nervous system and is often added to stress and sleep-support formulas.

As you can see, this is an extremely nutrient-dense herb. It also has a fairly mild flavor, making it easy to blend with other herbs without significantly affecting the taste.
It is impossible to say exactly how much of each is found in oatstraw. Herbs cannot be standardized in the same way as synthetic vitamins and minerals. Location, soil conditions, fertilizer, water quality, and even the length of the growing season can affect nutrient levels.
Oatstraw is typically cultivated rather than wildcrafted. This plant can be prone to bugs, so choosing organic oatstraw is important. We only use organic oatstraw. Herbs grown on farms that practice crop rotation and/or regenerative farming are likely to have higher nutrient levels.

We use Oatstraw in Snooze-EZ, Blue Green Minerals, and Original Herbal Minerals.
Snooze-EZ contains additional nervous system and sleep-supporting herbs, such as chamomile and valerian. It is one of the few pregnancy-friendly sleep support options available. Our customers like to take it plain or add it to a little warm water and enjoy it as a tea. Snooze-EZ is also a popular natural jet-lag remedy.
