Herb of the Month: Horehound
Posted by TriLight Health on Sep 23rd 2025
If you've ever gone into an old-fashioned candy shop- or seen one in a museum, you've probably seen horehound candy. This candy is still made, though not as well-known. Today, you're most likely to see horehound herb in herbal respiratory support products. The hard candies, once so widely used, actually helped lead to the creation of modern cough drops- which often have horehound added to them. It's been in use for much longer than the candies, though. The name comes from ancient Egyptian culture, who called it the "seed of Horus;" the falcon-headed god associated with protection and healing. Horehound has a slightly bitter taste and aromatic qualities. It is traditionally used in teas, tinctures, syrups, or candies—like the classic horehound drops. The leaves and flowers are also used in culinary preparations.
