Herb of the Month: Yerba Santa
Posted by TriLight Health on Mar 11th 2025
No, we are not talking about an herb of Christmastime today! Yerba Santa means "holy herb" or "sacred herb" in Spanish- not a reference to St. Nick. The scientific name Eriodictyon californicum tells us a lot about where this plant is found- primarily in California and surrounding areas. This hardy shrub is known to survive and even thrive after wildfires. Indigenous people used it not only in herbal medicine but to burn for smudging ceremonies. The flavor of Yerba Santa is not too pleasant so herbalists typically combine it with other herbs vs using it on its own. It is most often used in teas and tinctures. We hope you enjoy learning about this unique herb.
