Herb of the Month: Jujube
If you've ever eaten a date, then today's herb will look familiar to you. Jujube is also known as red date. They are from a similar plant and have an extremely similar flavor. Jujube has been revered for centuries for its unique nutritional profile. It was even named one of the five most nutritious fruits in an ancient Chinese document dated around the 3rd century BCE. It has a long history of use in Asian culture, cuisine, and medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Doctors discovered that it had a host of medicinal benefits and was a deeply nourishing fruit. Today, it is used in TCM, in Ayurvedic Medicine, and by some Western herbalists.

Traditional Herbal Uses of Jujube:
Ziziphus jujuba
- Allergy Support
- Anxiety
- Blood Pressure
- Blood Sugar
- Brain function
- Digestion
- Gut Health
- Immune Building & Support
- Nutrients
- & more
We also think Jujube might have the most fun scientific name of all time!
Note- certain antidepressant and seizure medications may interact with Jujube. If you are on any medication, are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have any health conditions, check with your healthcare provider before trying this fruit.
What nutrients are in Jujube?
So what exactly is in this "most nutritious fruit"? Most notable, loads of Vitamin C. Some measures cite it as one of the highest food sources of Vitamin C- up to 75% RDA- in existence. This plays into its traditional role in immune support.
You'll also find a generous amount of potassium, as is true in other varieties of dates.
Fiber is another key nutrient in these little red fruits. Thus contributing to their value for gut health and digestive support.

Of course, being a member of the date family means it is very sweet! Jujubes contain a lot of sugar, so moderation is key. Just as we now know there are "good fats" and "bad fats," there are also more beneficial and less beneficial forms of sugar. However, it is relatively low in calories. In most cases, dried Jujube will be used in culinary preparations, which slightly increases the sugar content.
It contains 18 essential amino acids. There are 24 known essential amino acids, so this packs a powerful way to get in those amino acids!!
Jujubes are also antioxidant-rich, as are many red and darker fruits.
It's important to remember that nutrient amounts will vary greatly between plants. Soil health, growing conditions, and even the region can affect the levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients. This is why it's rare to see standardized nutritional labels on herbal remedies and most fresh foods. It's impossible to test every single batch to determine the exact nutrients in the plants.
TriLight Health and Jujube
We use Jujube in our Traditional Chinese Medicine formula, ALRG. It was formulated for us by Dr. Ping Qi Kang, a TCM doctor from Shanghai, China.
ALRG has been one of our best-sellers for decades & is one of our formulas that customers most often tell their friends about. Niki says, "I love ALRG and recommend it to everyone who tells me they have allergies."
This is a blend of several other TCM herbs- Rehmannia, Astragalus Root, Xanthium, Centipede Herb, Siler Root, Skullcap Root, Capillaris, Angelica, Jujube, Licorice Root, and Spirodela Leaves.
Unlike other Allergy Support options, this one actually tastes amazing and is easy to take. Plus, it doesn't come with the side effects like sleepiness, brain fog, or jitters that other Allergy Support products may have. Glenda says, "This product is great. No drowsiness!"
ALRG can be used daily for up to one month before peak seasonal changes. Customers love that it can be diluted in water or taken straight. Typical use is every three hours, but your healthcare provider can help you determine the proper dosing for you. It can also be used as support in more acute, sudden situations.
Carol says, "This product is a mainstay in my house." Many TriLight customers agree, we see this as one of our top re-ordered products. Especially this time of year!
We combine ALRG with Sinus Minus and ViraMune in our Allergy Support Wellness Kit. These products work synergistically to provide optimal support during seasonal changes or year-round support.
Dixie says, "I love the fact that I can use these natural remedies, using the things God created and intended for us to use to help heal our bodies!!"
